In this solution, the substance is excited with a short laser pulse and emits light to be measured. The measurement is often carried out orthogonally to the direction of excitation. As the excitation is done with a short laser pulse compared to the propagation speed, the excitation appears to propagates locally from the perspective of the measurement direction. Using a standard optical setup, only a small volume of the solution is imaged onto the narrow slit of the streak camera and therefore only this light is detected. By tracking the propagating excitation, significantly more light can be captured. The tracking is carried out synchronously with the propagation in order not to impair the temporal resolution.
